YAKISUGI
2026.05.18
Recently, professors specializing in architectural design and construction from the National University of Singapore visited our factory to learn more about Yakisugi.
Kyoei Lumber has already supplied Yakisugi for many projects in Thailand. The professors explained that they are planning to conduct actual experiments in Singapore — which shares a similarly hot and humid climate with Thailand — to study the durability, termite resistance, and mold resistance of Yakisugi. The results are expected to be published as academic papers, and we believe this research will help clarify both the suitability of Yakisugi for tropical regions and appropriate installation methods for such environments.
We also exchanged ideas about charred wood products made from fast-growing tree species being cultivated in Singapore. When we shared some small ideas related to Japanese cedar and Yakisugi, the professors responded enthusiastically, saying “Very interesting!”, and even took some samples back with them. It feels like these exchanges may lead to new possibilities and collaborations in the future.
Although Yakisugi may appear to be a simple traditional material, continuously working closely with wood allows us to discover many possibilities — not only its beauty, cost efficiency, and low environmental impact, but also the fascinating natural properties of cedar and other wood species. It truly excites us to think about the future potential hidden within these materials.
I may not fully understand all the technical details, but through years of hands-on experience, I sincerely feel motivated to continue steadily working with Yakisugi and learning from wood itself.
The photo shows what we were told is a “casual Singapore pose” — not a peace sign, but this instead!
At Kyoei Lumber, we value encounters with people from various countries and backgrounds. If you have a chance to visit Japan, we would be delighted to welcome you to our company.
